Schools of the Week: Westwood Elementary and Woodland Middle

Community and connections were on full display May 9 at Fairview Elementary. 

School counselor Whitney Chambers-Woods organized a community outreach meeting for Fairview leaders and businesses to learn about the school. The meeting, called Hawk Horizon, allowed fifth-grade student ambassadors to share facts, accomplishments and highlights from the year with their distinguished guests.

"We want these leaders to know they are an important part of our school and our students’ future,” said Chambers-Woods. "The response we've seen from all areas of the community has been wonderful, and we love being able to share our story with them."

In addition to breakfast, the visitors also attended the school's weekly Hawk House Meeting, where they watched as students received awards and sang the Fairview Elementary song.

Students from high schools around the county gathered at Summit High on Wednesday, May 7, to participate in the Special Olympics.

The athletes competed in various categories, including a 100-meter run, long jump, softball throw and more.

Kindergarten students at Scales Elementary are putting a playful twist on learning their ABCs.

On May 12, SES kindergartners marched through the school hallways dressed in creative costumes, each representing a different letter of the alphabet. Adding to the excitement, teachers joined the fun by donning letter-themed outfits of their own.

"The alphabet parade is something my kindergarten team and I look forward to all year," said Scales kindergarten teacher Teresa King. "We loved seeing all of the original ideas and students walking the halls full of confidence while showing off their costumes and special letter."

The flag football season continues in WCS.

Brentwood, Independence and Page high schools faced off on the field on Thursday, May 1. Take a look at some of the highlights from the games.

Hunters Bend Elementary put its students' artwork on display during its Family Art Night, May 1.

Thousands of pieces of student work were showcased in the hallways of the school. HBES art teacher Steven Hamby curated several different exhibits, including a glow room.

"We have more than 2,150 pieces of art at our Family Art Night," Hamby said. "It's fun to see what the students create."
