A unit on life cycles is taking Westwood Elementary second graders to the great outdoors.

On September 16, the students released the butterflies they had been studying. By observing caterpillars and their metamorphosis into butterflies, students learned about the similarities between what butterflies need and what humans need to grow.

"One of the best parts is watching the kids be so careful with the butterflies after they are released," said Westwood teacher Alex McKee, M. Ed. "The kids get to see them grow up from itty bitty caterpillars to fully grown adult butterflies, so they feel really protective of them."
