Schools of the Week: Edmondson Elementary and Heritage Middle

The Schools of the Week spotlight is on Edmondson Elementary and Heritage Middle this week. Take a look at the photo galleries below to see some of the fun in each school building, and see quotes from employees and students about what makes their school great.

Edmondson Elementary

Edmondson Elementary second and third graders are working together to learn about music and sound.

Third-grade students in music teacher Elaina Gallas' class made instruments out of recycled materials and showed the second graders their creations. The second-grade students just finished their science unit on sound, so this was an opportunity to learn about both music and science.

"We made our instruments at home," said EES third-grader Idhika Bhatnagar. "I made a panflute, and I blow on it and it makes noises. It's made out of hot glue, cardboard and straws."

Heritage Middle

Students at Heritage Middle are taking on a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) challenge in Sarah Fischer's class.

Using cardboard, wheels, wooden sticks and battery-powered motors, students are designing and building cars that will travel down the school hallway. Fischer says her students enjoy the creative problem-solving that the challenges require.

"I just really like engineering, so I find this a lot of fun," said HMS student Clara Li Phipps. "If you correctly wire everything together, it will start moving forward. The biggest challenge depends on your mindset. For me, the wheels are the hardest part about this project because our axle keeps breaking."
