Schools of the Week: Crockett Elementary and Franklin High

Crockett Elementary

"Teaching at Crockett Elementary is special because of the overall feeling of family. Supportive parents, teachers and staff invest so much of themselves into making learning fun and engaging. My own children attended Crockett years ago before I came back to teach, and every day I imagine their younger selves being in our Crockett hallways, being met every morning with a smile and a hug from their teachers. Learning was a family event at Crockett Elementary during the school's Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art and Math (STREAM) Night March 9.

With robots, drones, puzzles and more, there were plenty of fun activities to occupy students and their families throughout the evening.

"We've included so many things tonight," said CES math coach Denise Bahrke. "The drones are definitely the favorite, and the students are having a great time. We haven't had a STREAM Night since the pandemic, so it's exciting to be doing this again."

Franklin High

"It's my first year at Franklin, and my favorite aspect of teaching here is the outstanding welcome and continuing support I've received from the administrative team and faculty. The staff, students and parents have created a strong community here, and I'm glad to be a part of it." - FHS teacher Allison Roberts

"My favorite thing about attending Franklin High is that, even as a senior having spent over a thousand days in my four years here, I can say that it was not enough time. It is not that I do not feel prepared, in fact, I know because of my time at FHS I will be ready for all academic and social happenings, but that I will leave my favorite community. The faculty and students have created a place where we feel safe and excited to learn, being poured into daily in an impactful way. Franklin High teacher Patti Castle is finding ways to make math engaging for her students.

On Friday, March 10, algebra students learned about linear regression through several fun challenges. They were first asked to pass a book as fast as possible down a growing line of students. Each time someone new was added, it created a new data point. The second challenge was to grab as many Starbursts in one hand as possible.

"We were collecting real-world data and learning calculator skills," said Castle. "We used our data to make predictions, and we did it through kinesthetic learning. The more functions of your body that you can use, not just hearing and seeing but also doing and touching, makes lessons more engaging for students."
