Clovercroft Elementary Students Showcase Business Skills at Market Day

Students at Clovercroft Elementary are learning valuable skills by participating in Market Day.

This year's event took place February 7, giving third graders a chance to buy and sell homemade goods and services to their fellow students. Teachers say Market Day is a great way for students  to learn economic concepts like supply and demand, entrepreneurship and pricing.

“We've been talking a lot in class about wants versus needs and goods versus services," said third-grade teacher Emily Zotti. “Market Day is the culmination of everything they have learned this unit and a chance for the students to put it all into action.”

Each classroom was turned into a store as students displayed their wares on their desks. Two 30-minute rounds of shopping allowed them to sell their own products and buy goods from other students.

“Market Day is really fun because you get to visit other classrooms and buy their products," said third grader Lily Pahlevani. "I loved seeing what everyone made, and all the products are amazing. I got to be a seller first, and I made bracelets and charged $1.50, but then I had a clearance and charged one dollar.”

Students were able to choose which products they wanted to sell, which led to a diverse marketplace with everything from dream-catchers and bracelets to bookmarks and paper footballs.
