The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) has added a new member to its team of School Resource Officers (SRO). The Williamson County Commission approved the new addition at its January meeting.

Independence High SRO Amy Fann adopted two-year-old Nala, a Belgian Malinois, who will accompany her to work at school. Nala is a specially trained narcotics detection dog. Fann said that Nala has undergone extensive training, has a keen sense of smell and will be an invaluable asset to the SRO team and community. She said that she and her husband, WCSO Lieutenant Brad Fann, have worked to ensure Nala has the right temperament to be around students every day.

"The Indy students and staff have welcomed Nala with open arms,” said Fann. “I think they enjoy interacting with her in the hallways and classrooms. We are confident that Nala will be a valuable addition to our team, and we appreciate Sheriff Hughes’ support of this SRO initiative.”

While based at IHS, Nala will also be available to visit other schools in the Williamson County and Franklin Special districts, along with meeting needs in the greater Williamson County community.

"We are excited to welcome Nala to Indy Nation through our partnership with the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office," said IHS Principal Dr. Niki Patton. "Nala is already fitting in as part of our school family, and her presence reinforces our commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment for all students."
