Students Showcase Reading Skills in Battle of the Books Competitions

Both elementary and middle school students put their reading knowledge to the test at this year's Battle of the Books competition.

All 11 middle schools and Hillsboro School participated in the district’s middle school contest on March 23 at the Brentwood Library. Teams of readers competed in three rounds where they answered detailed questions about a selected list of books. The event highlighted students’ comprehension, teamwork and quick thinking as they battled for the top spots.

Spring Station Middle won this year's contest and received $5,000 for its school library from the event's sponsor, Atmos Energy. Grassland Middle came in second with a $3,000 prize, and Woodland Middle received $2,000 for third place.

"Winning this year is so exciting," said Spring Station seventh grader Penny. "My favorite part of it all is just being on a team with my friends."

Elementary students took the stage March 17 at Thompson's Station Elementary for their own Battle of the Books competition. For the second year in a row, Heritage Elementary claimed first place honors. Sunset Elementary earned second place, followed by Thompson’s Station Elementary in third.

"I am so proud that Heritage Elementary is now back-to-back champions for the district's Battle of the Books competition," said HES Principal Shannon Robertson. "Thank you to our wonderful library team and all our parents for their support."
