Woodland Middle Students Study Density

Sixth grade students at Woodland Middle are starting the second quarter off by studying density.

This week, students worked with water that had different salt levels and water that was at different temperatures. They found that the density of water changes depending on what’s added or subtracted. When the density changes, the water will divide into layers as it’s put into a vial. To see the division more clearly, food dye was added to color the water.

“We’re learning a lot about density this nine weeks,” said WMS science teacher Emily Lucas said. “The students are able to see distinct layers because water at a higher temperature is less dense than water at a lower temperature.”
