Rumor Mill – September 17, 2019
Published September 17, 2019
Is it true that WCS has done away with naming valedictorians and salutatorians?
That is not true. Valedictorians and salutatorians have not been eliminated. A valedictorian and salutatorian will still be named at each school. Class rank has been eliminated from transcripts, and WCS has gone to a Latin ranking system. This policy was changed because many of our talented students were scoring GPA’s extremely close to each other. WCS has added additional criteria to GPA for those honors. Additional information can be found online in School Board Policy 4.600.
I’ve been told the library at Independence High School is going away and turning into a cafe. I’ve been told books will be available online and that this is a trial run for something that could happen district-wide. Is this true?
No, the Independence High School PTSO has purchased new furniture, and the school is remodeling the library. The school also recently donated some books that have not been in circulation in more than five years.
There is talk of Redwing neighborhoods off of Lewisburg Pike being rezoned to Centennial High School. Is there any merit to this rumor?
The School Board set zoning parameters at the September 16 Board meeting. District staff will present a zoning plan for the new middle school on Henpeck Lane and any other zone line changes at the School Board Work Session on October 17 and the Board meeting on October 21. Community meetings will be announced at a later date.
The purpose of this section is to answer any questions parents, teachers or community members might have regarding the school district and to set the record straight in regards to any rumors that might be circulating.
