Across the Board – October 21, 2019

The Williamson County School Board approved the 2020-21 academic calendar at its October 21, 2019, regular meeting. Highlights of the calendar include August 3, first teacher day; August 7, first half day for students; December 21-January 1, Winter Break; March 15-19, Spring Break; May 21, last day for students; and May 24, last day for teachers.

Two students were honored for earning a perfect ACT score at the October 21, 2019 Williamson County Board of Education Meeting. Brentwood High students Michelle Qiu and Parker Kasiewicz each earned the accomplishment.

The Franklin High Boys Golf Team was honored for winning the 2019 TSSAA Boys’ Golf Team Division 1 Large Class State Championship. Team members include Harrison Akers, Eli Cleveland, Griffin Cochran, Jack Morris, Eric Schneider, Bradford Smith, Joseph Stanley, Cooper Wilcox, Jack Wilcox, Sam Wilcox and Connor Williams.  Their coach is Jon Whipple.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Jason Golden reminded Board members of the zoning and rezoning meetings for the new middle school on Henpeck Lane and other elementary and middle schools in the area. Those meetings will be held October 29 beginning at 6:15 p.m. in the Oak View Elementary cafeteria and November 7 at 6 p.m. in the Thompson’s Station Middle cafeteria.

In the Board Chairman’s Report, Gary Anderson thanked the Ravenwood High School Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Cassandra Brosvik for performing prior to the meeting. He also reminded the Board of the TSBA Conference in November.

In New Business, the Board:

  • Approved two 2019-2020 General Purpose School Fund Amendments: one for a $15,000 donation for robotics equipment and one for a transition grant.
  • Approved a Inter Category Transfer for health services.
  • Approved General Purpose School Board Resolution for 20 additional Special Education Teacher Assistant positions.
  • Approved a recommendation to add a $100 fee approval for field trips to the approved field trip fee list.
  • Approved the School Board Code of Ethics.
  • Approved the following policies on first reading:  3.209, 3.211, 3.215, 3.216, 6.200, 6.201, 6.203, 6.209, 6.306, 6.400, 6.4001, 6.403, 6.405, 6.4052, 6.4081, 6.409, 6.412, 6.413, 6.414, 6.503, 6.505, 6.601, 6.602.
  • Approved the following policies for deletion:  3.213, 6.5052, 6.4002, 6.406, 6.411, 6.501, 6.6021, 6.6022, 6.6023, 6.703, 6.705, 6.713, 6.714.

In Other Business, the Board:

  • Approved three policies on second reading including Code of Ethics for School Board Members, Promotion and Retention and Credit Requirements for Graduation.
  • Approved recommended field trip fee requests.
  • Approved the 2020-21 Budget timeline.
  • Approved the Community Bible Church of Williamson County lease at Longview Elementary.

The next regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education is scheduled for Monday, November 18, 2019, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Administrative Complex.
