Across the Board – August 19, 2019

The Williamson County Board of Education celebrated students, staff and schools at its first meeting of the school year on Monday, August 19, 2019. Woodland Middle’s Natalie Porter was recognized for winning first place at the National Speech and Debate Association in Dramatic Interpretation. Her teacher is Margaret Hall.

Five students were honored for receiving a perfect ACT Composite Score including Centennial students Lily Britto and Lexis Khetsavanh; Independence student Emma Sower; and Ravenwood students Rithika Tummala and William Fiecht.

The district’s 28 Reward Schools were celebrated. Elementary schools include Allendale, Bethesda, Clovercroft, Edmondson, Fairview, Heritage, Lipscomb, Mill Creek, Nolensville, Pearre Creek, Sunset, Trinity, and Westwood. Hillsboro School, along with middle schools Brentwood, Fairview, Grassland, Heritage, Mill Creek, Page, Spring Station, Sunset and Woodland were honored. High schools earning the designation include Franklin, Independence, Nolensville, Page and Ravenwood.

The Communications Department was recognized for earning two Golden Achievement Awards from the National Public Relations Association for the Just Drive and It’s Yellow for a Reason public service announcements.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Jason Golden shared that the school parent organizations and booster clubs had raised more than $10 million during the 2018-19 school year. He also shared that there were 41,355 students enrolled but that number could change over the next few weeks.

In the Board Chairman’s Report, Gary Anderson reminded the Board about the Board Fall Retreat on August 28.

In New Business, the Board:

  • Approved five General Purpose School Fund Amendments to the 2019-20 School Board budget to include Carryforward Reserves; United Way; Additional PreK Classroom; Transition Grant; and Safe Schools Grant.
  • Approved a sidewalk for the Sunset campus from the Education Capital Projects Fund.
  • Approved a General Purpose School Board Resolution for additional EC Classrooms.
  • Approved a General Purpose School Board Resolution Intent to Fund for the Central Middle School.
  • Approved the following Board policies on first reading: 1.406, 2.403, 2.601, 6.308, 6.506, 3.200, 3.201, 3.2011, 3.202, 3.205, 3.402, 3.500, 5.101, 5.105, 5.107, 5.701, 5.802.
  • Approved and editorial change for policy School Attendance Areas, Zoning and Nonresident Students.
  • Approved the deletion of Fire Prevention, Emergency Drills, Bomb Threat Procedures.

In Unfinished Business, the Board:

  • Approval of $10M Capital Request from 2019-2020 Budget Process.

In Other Business, the Board:

  • Approved the 2019-2020 Annual Agenda.
  • Approved Sick Leave Bank Trustees.
  • Approved Outstanding Purchase Orders for School Activity Funds.
  • Approved the ePlan Application and Budget for the FY 2020, ESEA Title III Immigrant Grant.
  • Approved the Christ Chapel of Spring Hill, Inc. Lease at Thompson’s Station Elementary and Middle Schools.
  • Approved a Creekside Elementary School Unsuitable Soil Conditions Change Order.

The next regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education is scheduled for Monday, September 16, 2019, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Administrative Complex.
