Academic All-Star – Joy Schoen, Mill Creek Elementary

Ten-year-old Joy Schoen wants to be a teacher when she grows up. The fifth grader says she’s been inspired by some of the excellent educators at Mill Creek Elementary School.

“I wanted to be a doctor when I was little, but now I want to be a teacher because I’ve seen how much they can help,” said Joy, who was officially named the school’s Academic All-Star on January 30.

“Joy is a student who goes above and beyond in all of her efforts at school,” said her teachers. “She perseveres even when schoolwork becomes rigorous, and she spends the necessary time to learn even the toughest of concepts. Joy is soft spoken, but she has a fun-loving personality that makes all of her friends want to be in her presence.”

According to Joy, the teachers at Mill Creek played a large role in helping her make the transition from her old school in Texas.

“We moved here two years ago from Dallas,” said Joy. “I’m shy, so I was really nervous, but it’s been a lot easier than I thought it would. Everyone here is very welcoming to new students.”

Joy says her current teacher, Stacy Kissinger, has even helped her discover a new favorite subject.

“I really like math,” said Joy. “It used to be hard, but now I get it. Ms. Kissinger teaches it in a way I can understand which makes it more fun.”

Speaking of fun, Joy’s favorite after-school activities include swimming and photography.

“I am in the yearbook group, so I get to take pictures for that,” said Joy. “It’s fun to try and get the right angle and do whatever you need to do to get the shot. Because of that, I’m a lot better with my own digital camera at home.”

Joy says staying focused on school is easy when you have a goal in mind.

“Well, if I want to be a teacher I have to live up to certain standards,” said Joy. “You have to learn before you can teach others.”
