Academic All-Star – Ava Aguilar, Hillsboro School (Middle)

Ava Aguilar is making history at Hillsboro School by being the first student in the history of the district to win multiple Academic All-Star awards.

Ava, who won the award last year as a fifth grader at Pearre Creek Elementary, was recognized this year at Hillsboro for being a model student both in and out of the classroom.

“Ava is respected by all that know her,” said her teachers. “She greets everyone with an energetic hello and smile. She cares for her classmates and models what an inclusive learning environment should look like. Ava is always willing to lend a helping hand to an adult or a peer, and she comes to class eager to learn, every day.”

Ava says making the transition to Hillsboro has been relatively easy, thanks in large part to all of the great teachers and students at the school.

“It’s really fun here,” said Ava. “I love the teachers because they’re always so friendly and willing to help if you’re having trouble.”

Ava has especially enjoyed participating in both the theater and orchestra programs at Hillsboro.

“With theater, I was nervous at first, but then I got used to it,” said Ava. “I also play the cello. I just started this year. Sometimes it’s hard because we’re learning really neat pieces, but overall it’s a lot of fun.”

Ava is also an avid reader who says she may want to be a book reviewer when she grows up.

“I’m really into Harry Potter right now,” said Ava. “I’m reading book five in the series, The Order of the Phoenix.”

When asked what motivates her to do well in school, Ava says much of it is self-imposed.

“I always try my best because if I don’t do my best, I feel like I’ll disappoint myself,” said Ava.

With that sort of drive and determination, Ava’s teachers say she’s poised for success.

“Ava works extremely hard in class and is not afraid to ask for help when she needs it,” said her teachers. “When she finishes work in class, she spends her time helping others or evaluates the quality of her own work. We’re proud to name her our Academic All-Star.”
