The Sunset Middle Science Olympiad team’s hard work and practice paid off when the students won several medals at the state tournament.

The Science Olympiad is a competition consisting of 23 events. Each event requires teamwork and communication between students. This year’s state tournament took place in Knoxville April 6.

In the Circuit Lab event, SMS students Matthew Mueller and Caleb West won first place. Sharada Ghantasala and Dattu Panuganti earned fourth place in the Density Lab event, and Sharada Ghantasala and Ajay Balaje won fourth place in the Disease Detective event.

“The Science Olympiad requires student initiative, diligence, repetition and a level of perfection,” said SMS Science Olympiad coach Michael McKaig. “I am extremely proud of these kids for competing and earning a place in the state competition.”
