Across the Board – March 25, 2019

The Williamson County Board of Education honored four students for earning a perfect 36 composite score on the ACT during its regular meeting March 25, 2019. The students include Mithul Nallaka and Pardhav Polavarapu from Brentwood High; Page High’s Andrew Sullivan; and Ravenwood High’s Samuel Duggan.

Nolensville High student Rishi Pillai was honored for his appointment as First Vice President to the Student Congress On Policies in Education, SCOPE, sponsored by the Tennessee School Boards Association.

Several students from across the county brought home first place honors from the Tennessee High School Press Association Awards.  In the TV and Media categories winners include Brentwood High’s WBHS 9 for Best TV Station; the football crew for Best Live Sports Coverage; Ashley Gracia, RJ Taylor, Madison Hebert,  Cole Hubbard, Allison Steele, Robert Dickenson and Cole Hendry for Best Newscast; Cristobal Speilmann for Best Feature Story; Nathan Nance, Allison Steele, Lena Gurley, Casey Crowe, Sierra Windle, James Derryberry, Garrett Linney and Jack Wilson for Best Lip Dub; Garrett Linney and Caroline Hart for Best News Package; Casey Crowe and Nathan Nance for Best Sports Video; and RJ Taylor and Garrett Linney for Best Sports Package.  Their teacher is Ronnie Adcock.

Franklin High’s Will McAdams and Ivan Chen won for Best Commercial; Will McAdams, Will Matteson, Seth Woodruff and Caley Chapman won for Best Music Video; Joe Dresher and Ryan Wells won for Best Short Feature; and Bryson Sams, Porter Edwards, Matthew Dyra, Anna Claire Latta, Jackson Fults, Colin Perrigo, Carter Fulkerson, Benton Pillans, Joseph An, Braxton Lazarus, Moses Levine, Maddie Kerr, Branyone Coleman, Joseph Clinton, Nikki Tudor and Emily Maier won for Best Video. Their teacher is Keri Thompson.

Independence High’s Mia Prouse and Lissie Hayes won for Best Public Service Announcement; Bella Gordon won for Best Reporter; and Gavin Haworth, Reid Smith, Garret Walker and Jackson Warren won for Best Sports Show. Their teacher is Matt Balzer.

Two teachers were celebrated for recently being named a Tennessee Council for Social Studies Teacher of the Year. Scales Elementary’s Melody Scott is representing the elementary level, and Franklin High’s Ray Scheetz is representing the high school level.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Looney called on staff members to share an overview of the work of the Cultural Competency Council and the professional development that has been shared with teachers.

In the Board Chairman’s Report, Gary Anderson reminded Board members of special meeting dates in the next few weeks.

In New Business, the Board:

  • Approved 2019-2020 School Board Budgets to include the General Purpose School Fund for $386,428,331; the Central Cafeteria Fund for $13,883,216; the Extended School Program Fund for $7,066,258; and the Capital Request for $13,254,951. The budgets will now go before the County Commission budget and education committees before going before the full County Commission in July.
  • Approved open zone schools for 2019-2020.
  • Approved 2019-2020 high school courses.
  • Approved 2019-2020 high school special course applications.
  • Approved Textbook Adoption Committee recommendations.
  • Selected Creekside as the name for the new central elementary school located on Gosey Hill.
  • Approved all Section 4 policies on first reading.
  • Approved the deletion of the Federal Program policy on first reading.
  • Approved the Overtime Pay policy on first reading.
  • Pulled a Resolution of the Williamson County Board of Education Opposing Statewide or Alternative Charter School Authorizers.

In Other Business, the Board:

  • Approved recommended field trip fee requests.
  • Approved two policies on second reading, Vacation and Holidays and Physical Examinations and Immunizations.

The next regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education is scheduled for Tuesday, April 16, 2019, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Administrative Complex.
