Athletic state championships were in the spotlight at the June 18, 2018, meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education. In all, 12 state championships were won during the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association’s (TSSAA) Spring Fling. In tennis, Brentwood’s Evie Calhoun and Georgia Fischer won Girls’ Doubles; the Brentwood Girls’ Team won the team championship.  Their coach is Bill Jayne. The Ravenwood Boys’ Team won the team championship. Their coach is Chris Bates.

In track and field, Brentwood’s Katherine Coffey won the Shot Put and the Discus championships. Her coach is Steve Wade.  Also from Brentwood, Jett Kinder won the High Jump and the Decathlon. The Brentwood Boys’ Team won the team State Championship. Their coach is Steve Brock.

Centennial athlete Avery McMullen won the Long Jump and the Outdoor Pentathlon. Her coaches are Marcya Bove and Stanley Miller. Fairview’s Kaylee Bartee won the High Jump in the small school division. Her coach is Chris Smith.

Page’s Gigi Maddox won the 3200 Meter Run. Her coach is Gary Maddux.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Mike Looney provided a TNReady testing update to the group.

In the Board Chairman’s Report, Gary Anderson announced that the Board would not meet in July unless a special called meeting was needed. He also thanked Assistant Superintendent of Teaching, Learning and Assessment Tim Gaddis for his years of service to the district. Gaddis is retiring at the end of the month.

In Unfinished Business, the Board:

Approved TSBA initial customized Board policy subscription and maintenance.

In New Business, the Board:

  • Approved attorney fees for Dr. Looney.
  • Approved intra-category transfers to these 2017-2018 School Board budgets: General Purpose School Fund Amendment; Central Cafeteria Fund Amendment; and Extended School Program Fund Amendment.
  • Approved a General Purpose School Fund amendment for PreK Training and Curriculum.
  • Approved a General Purpose School Fund amendment for a state grant to Renaissance High School to attend a conference for a learning management system.
  • Approved 2018-2019 School Board meeting dates.
  • Approved one policy on first reading, Student Transportation Management.

In Other Business, the Board:

  • Approved recommended field trip fee requests.
  • Approved the PECCA memorandum of understanding.
  • Approved the 2018-2019 pay schedules.
  • Approved a two percent raise and the second year of the Classified Study Plan for the 2018-2019 budget.
  • Approved the ePlan application for 2019, Title III, Immigrant Grant.
  • Approved a Mill Creek Elementary School playground.
  • Approved the Nolensville High School and Cumberland River Compact.
  • Approved the Thompson’s Station Elementary and Middle School topsoil request.
  • Approved improvements to the Walnut Grove Elementary School playground.

The next regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education is scheduled for Monday, August 20, 2018, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Administrative Complex.
