Woodland Middle Students Combine Science and Art

Students at Woodland Middle School are learning to be creative by combining science and art.

A recent grant allowed for Jen Vogus, an artist from Borderless Arts TN, to visit Destiny Erwin’s class November 14-17. Borderless Arts TN provides students and adults with disabilities opportunities to participate in, learn through, and enjoy the arts.

During her visit to the school, Vogus taught the students how to make their own lava lamps in plastic bottles using oil and colored water. She also showed them how to use iPads to turn abstract color splatters made from liquid watercolors and oil into patterns and shapes. In addition, the students viewed photographs of oil spills and talked about the consequences they can have on the environment.

The project was made possible by a grant from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in which the arts are used to teach science concepts related to water.
