Winstead Elementary Encore Camp 2017

Published July 21, 2017

Oreo dirt cups, slime-making and manicures don’t have a lot in common, but Winstead Elementary Schools managed to bring all that and more under its roof for the 2017 Encore Camp.

This is second-grade teacher Angie Faulkner’s third time hosting the camp, and it’s grown every year since she started. From about 110 students during its first run, the Encore Camp now hosts more than 170 students.

“Our goal was to grow it every year, and it has,” said Faulker.

Students spent July 10-14 doing anything from building Lego islands to making lemon scrubs and having a great time doing it.

“Anything with food is always a favorite,” said Faullker. “It’s a big mix. What they like to do is all different. They just love doing everything.”

With a camp that’s continuously growing, it takes a lot of planning to make it run smoothly. One of Faulker’s favorite parts of Encore Camp is seeing the students’ reactions when the work finally comes together.

“It’s really busy, and it takes a lot getting organized,” said Faulkner. “But when you’re here and you see all the kids with smiles on their faces, and them having fun, that’s the best part.”
