Teen Drivers Urged to Stay Safe This Summer

Williamson County Schools wants teen drivers to stay safe this summer by eliminating distractions, obeying the speed limit and staying focused on the road.

According to AAA, the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day is known as the “100 Deadliest Days” for teen drivers. This is because fatality crashes among drivers aged 16-17 increases by 15 percent during that stretch.

In addition, drivers in the 16-17-year-old age group are three times as likely to get involved in a deadly crash compared to adults.

“It’s true that summers are more dangerous for teen drivers,” said WCS Safety and Security Director Michael Fletcher. “Students are out of school; they have more free time to spend on the roadways; but they also have the least amount of driving experience. That’s why it’s so important that students eliminate distractions, wear their seatbelts and travel at a safe speed.”

At the beginning of the school year, the district worked with the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office to produce a series of distracted driving PSA’s. The videos which can be seen below feature each high school SRO with a special message for his school.
