Solar Eclipse at Lipscomb Elementary
Published August 21, 2017
Lipscomb Elementary went all-out in order to celebrate the solar eclipse.
Instead of celebrating its yearly Science Week in February like usual, the school decided to begin it on August 16 to incorporate the solar eclipse.
Each grade had different activities relating to the eclipse. First graders learned about the moon’s orbit around the Earth; third graders built a replica of the eclipse; and fourth graders built their own “Lunar Landers” for their marshmallow astronauts.
On August 21, Lipscomb Elementary invited parents and the community to join in as students in first through fifth grade went outside to view the eclipse. Kindergartners watched a live-stream of the eclipse from inside.
While waiting for totality, students were able to see how the shapes of shadows changed, watch shadow bands appear and listen as each phase of contact was announced.
Science Week continues until Wednesday, August 23.
