SCAM ALERT: Utility Customers Targeted
Published March 23, 2018
Williamson County Schools would like to warn members of the community about a scam that is targeting utility customers.
This week, Nolensville High School received a call from someone claiming to be with the Nashville Electric Service. The person claimed the school was behind on its payments and that the school’s power would be turned off unless the school paid the bill over the phone. The school did not fall for the scam.
According to Nashville Electric Service’s website, this is a scam that is often used to target local businesses, the elderly and non-English speaking customers. These criminals even have the capability of “spoofing” or altering the name on the caller ID so that customers see NES’ name and phone number when the scammer calls.
If someone calls threatening to cut off your power if you don’t pay, hang up. If you think you’ve been scammed, contact the local police. Never give personal or financial information to an unsolicited caller. If you’re unsure about a phone call, email, text or on-site visit, give NES a call first before taking any action.
