Safety and Security Discussed at Community Meeting

If you see something, say something. That was theme March 20 as approximately 200 parents, educators and community members gathered in Franklin to discuss safety and security in Williamson County Schools.

The event, which was held at the Church of the City, featured presentations by Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney, Safety and Security Director Michael Fletcher and Williamson County Sheriff’s Office Captain Mark Wainwright as well as a question-and-answer session.

Looney began the meeting by explaining some of the safety measures already in place and stressing to parents the importance of tracking their child’s online activity.

“We have to work collectively to monitor what our students are doing on social media because they think that you’re not watching,” said Looney. “As a school district we are committed to building professional relationships with students so that we know if something is amiss. If your child has a social media account please follow them and know what they are doing.”

Fletcher discussed some additional steps the district is considering which include adding a visitor management system and an improved communication system. Looney was quick to point out that prevention starts at home.

“There is no security system that is perfect,” said Looney. “If they get to the school house it’s too late. We have to prevent them from getting there which means the intervention has to start before they get to the school house.”
