Mill Creek Middle Hosts Inaugural BE NICE Day

In the midst of BE NICE Month, Mill Creek Middle School was diving headfirst into the spirit of the season by hosting its first BE NICE Day.

On September 29, students and faculty at MCMS spent part of their day collecting food and spreading the BE NICE message.

“We heard about Brentwood Middle School’s BE NICE Day and how successful it was,” said MCMS differentiation coach Carla Richards. “Now that we have a National Junior Honor Society Club, we wanted our students to have an opportunity to be leaders.”

The day’s success depended not only on the students but on the teachers as well. A 75-minute lesson was created for each class, and to make it effective, everyone had to be on board.

“The teachers had to prepare for it, have high expectations for their students and deliver it in such a way that students would get the most out of it,” Richards said. “There is a lot of support at MCMS. Teachers work together to make every day an adventure.”

During the day, the students collected three crates of food to donate to One Generation Away. But one of the biggest parts of the day was lunch time.

“Students sat by students they don’t always sit by and had conversations with them,” Richards said. “Students also gave kindness cards to others, and their willingness to write letters to those in the military and elderly people was one of the best parts of the day.”

MCMS plans on making BE NICE Day an annual tradition, and there are plans for a longer or full-day version in the spring.

“We hope to do it for an entire day,” Richards said. “And we hope to add some team building activities and possibly an off-site service opportunity. There are lots of things we didn’t have time to start in year one but are trying to start in year two.”
