Lipscomb Elementary Encore Camp 2017

Published July 21, 2017

The first day of school is quickly approaching, but students already flocked to Lipscomb Elementary School to attend its annual Encore Camp.

Like many of the Encore Camps around Williamson County Schools, this is Lipscomb’s biggest camp yet. After starting with just more than 100 students, the camp had more than 160 students enroll in its classes. It even had to stop enrollment in some of the more popular ones.

“There’s always favorites,” said second-grade teacher Cynthia Gatlin. “Harry Potter is always a favorite. We had Star Wars this year, which was popular. The escape class filled up pretty fast. We will always close cupcakes, sweet treats, cake decorating and things like that. And some kids will sign up for three sugar classes.”

The fun came from more than just the classes – every morning, the students were given quite the welcome.

“We have a magician that comes and does our opening every morning,” Gatlin said. “I love seeing kids be amazed, even if they’ve seen something similar the year before. They’re just so enthusiastic.”

With more ideas than ever available on the internet, teachers can really put on their thinking caps when it comes to classes for the students to enjoy.

“It’s educational, but I also think it provides them some fun,” said LES second-grade teacher Cynthia Gatlin. “The teachers are so creative, and they come up with some great things. They’re able to do things we can’t do on a normal basis.”
