Discussing the Issues at SCOPE Conference

More than a dozen Williamson County Schools students now have a better understanding of the issues facing school boards across the state.
Seventeen students from high schools across the district participated in this year’s Tennessee School Board Association (TSBA) Student Congress on Policies in Education (SCOPE) conference.
The conference, held at Middle Tennessee State University at the beginning of March, allows high school students to gather and discuss current educational topics. This year, the debated topics included sharing student information without parents’ permission, corporal punishment and civics exams as a graduation requirement.
“SCOPE has allowed me to learn and understand how board members discuss issues,” said Summit High student Austin Cushey. “SCOPE is also a great place to meet new friends and learn about important problems in our school systems such as cyber-bullying.”
The student representatives were chosen based on their participation in the Teaching as a Profession class or their participation on the debate team at their schools.
Below are the students who represented each school at the SCOPE conference:
- Brentwood High: Jackson Cho and Shanelle Sorenson
- Centennial High: Anna Kate Boggs and Lily Shelton
- Fairview High: Zachary Oliphant and Vincent Caccese
- Franklin High: Michael Brown and Sally Shadrach
- Nolensville High: Brooke Berry
- Page High: Will Russell and Carli Crotty
- Ravenwood High: Sara Ali and Jack Berexa
- Renaissance High: Sidney Wagner and Eliza McLaughlin
- Summit High: Austin Cushey and Maggie Beth Kimbro
