Brentwood Middle Best Buddies Meet Their Matches

With two meetings under its belt, the Brentwood Middle School Best Buddies is starting the year off strong.

“Best Buddies is a program that sets up friendships for people with intellectual disabilities,” said Christine Gerwein, who works in student support services at BMS. “We have monthly parties, and today the students are meeting their buddies for the first time.”

The match party was carnival-themed, which meant popcorn, a stuffed animal petting zoo and a song playlist that could get anyone on their feet.

BMS Best Buddies President Dailey Shake met her Buddy when they were both in sixth grade.

“I’ve known Lauren since sixth grade when we were in class together,” Dailey said. “We are best friends. Best Buddies is really fun and great, and I really like it.”

During the year, Best Buddies members will have chances to participate in a number of activities.

“Sometimes they do lunch,” Gerwein said. “Dailey delivers mail for the Student Government Association, and sometimes Lauren tags along and helps out. They’ve met outside of school so many times.”

Judging by the reaction of the students, Gerwein says she believes it’s going to be another great year for the program.

“We have a lot of really enthusiastic sixth graders who just want everyone to have a friend, and it’s been really sweet,” Gerwein said. “I’m really looking forward to seeing some good friendships develop.”
