Brentwood High School Keeps Latin Alive

Published April 27, 2018

Latin is alive at Brentwood High School where students are earning awards for their knowledge of the language.

At the Tennessee Junior Classical League’s Latin State Convention on April 20-21, Latin students from around the state were invited to test their skills against their peers. The top five students in each category received medals for their efforts.

The convention included competitions in categories like Dramatic Latin and a Mythology Spelling Bee, but there was also a chariot race that required students to build a chariot for four pullers and a helmet-wearing rider. The Brentwood High team placed second in the race.

They also performed well in the academic categories, taking home 13 medals.

“These students worked very hard to prepare for the convention,” said Brentwood High Latin teacher Diana Tomayko. “It’s their enthusiasm for Latin and the classics that made this such a worthwhile experience, and they are already talking about making a stronger showing next year.”
