Across the Board – November 27, 2017

The Williamson County Board of Education approved the 2018-19 school calendar during its regular meeting November 27, 2017. Highlights of the calendar include: August 3, first day for teachers; August 10, first half day for students; October 17-19, Fall Break; November 19-23, Thanksgiving Break; December 21, Winter Break begins at end of day; January 7, students return; March 18-22, Spring Break; May 23, last day for students.

Students were honored for accomplishments in academics, athletics and the arts during the meeting with 13 students recognized for earning a perfect ACT composite score including Brentwood’s Quinn Cunneely, Muhammad Fazili, Daniel Johnson, Max Tunnicliffe and Vincent Vilay; Franklin’s William Haslam, John McElroy and David Xu; Independence High’s Adam Hallmark and Wyatt Hayes; Page High’s Paxton Lifsey and Tanvi Jivtode; and Ravenwood’s Ryan Maguire.

Joe Roebuck from Ravenwood received the Tennessee Association for the Gifted Student of the Year award.

In athletics, Ravenwood was honored for winning the TSSAA Girls Cross Country Division I Large State Championship. Team members are Annika Sleenhof, Jamie Blaylock, Alex Rosen, Olivia Derr, Msgana Araya, Carson Everman and Elise Strevell. Their coach is Pete Mueller.

Brentwood High’s dance team won the 2017 TSSAA State Championship for Medium Varsity Jazz. Team members are Brianna Adkins, Claire Andrews, Addie Bonner, Ellen Bruns, Kate Bourlakas, Sydney Cash, Lilly Charron, Kailey Craig, Skylar Johnson, Alison Lambright, Maddie Mercurio, Hannah Mu, Molly Robinson, Anna Gray Ryan, Emily Schiedemeyer, Shelby Seeley, Emma Jo Tennant, Millie Mae Tennant, Addison Vaughn, Abigail Walton and Nora Wolfgang. Their coach is Lynzey Fulco.

Several Cheerleading teams won TSSAA State Championships. Franklin won for Small Varsity with team members Halle Repass, Rory Campbell, Emma Vysoky, Jaqui Butterfield, Kenadee Neece, Alley Spierto, Jordan Harrah, Riley Parks, Claire Zelaya, Ellie Bancroft, Ella Vysoky and Emma Bancroft. The coaches are Jessica Clark, Taylor DeSimone, and Sean Timmons.

In Medium Varsity, Ravenwood is the State Champion. The team members are Anna Anderson, Madeline Belleau, Ashton Carteaux, Olivia Corley, Sydney Dagostino, Avery Fallon, Ally Hankins, Reghan Jordan, Olivia Lamb, Morgan Lanius, Bailey Martin, Lexie Morgan, Sarah Murphy, Addie Raymer, Peyton Rositano, Riley Sisk, and Megan Zaves. The Raptors are coached by Barbee Morgan, Chasity Carter, Jay Noffsinger and Brittany Head. The faculty sponsor is Stephanie Dykes.

Centennial won for Large Varsity. Team members include Sydney Young, Katelyn Denno, Payton Greve, Preslie Kelly, Gracie McCloud, Mallory Moreau, Caroline Calabrace, Lucy Garth, Chloe Solomon, Maddie Lawrence, Emma Kate Best, Chandler Hindes, Lauren Robison, Minnie Collins, Kaylee Plowman, Emma Jordan, Emily Downey, Lily Shelton, Ali Hudson, Gracie Hlavati, Claudia Shelton, Audrey Spaulding and Courtney Kessler. Their coach is Melissa Bull.

Summit also won the Co-Ed Division. The team includes Reese Bailey, Regan Bailey, Olyvia Bradshaw, Maddie Brown, Addy Carlisle, Ethan Cochran, McKenzie Cochran, Kaycie Farner, Addie Fisher, Josh Griffith, Madi Hamm, Chance Jarosz, Bailey Kelley, Mackenzee Kirby, Abbey Lambers, Allison Ramirez, Abraham Reyes, Lauryn Ridolphi, Makayla Robison, Kelcie Rummage, Martha Ryan, Colby Stallings, Mary Carsen Stanley, Quade Thomas, Taegen Warren, Rylee Wingerter, Analiese Wooldridge, Delaney Wyatt and Tryleigh York. Elizabeth Matuskzewski is their coach.

In the arts, several students were selected for the 2017 Middle Tennessee All State Choir. From Brentwood High, Georgia Winkler, Nikkole Dittler, Alex Cook, Virginia Guerrero, Sydnei Humphrey-Davis, Carol Morse, Easton Freeze, Sam McAllister and Will Ryan, and their teacher is Natalie Pratt.

Julian Watson and McKenzie Garey were chosen from Centennial. Their teacher is Dr. Johnathan Vest. Emma Grace Schenck and Isabella Stachurski represent Franklin. Their teacher is Angela Beal. Ravenwood’s members include were Lauren Case, Tristan Tournaud and Ben Jessop. Their teacher is Lauren Ramey. Summit’s representatives include Allie Smith and Katelyn Greenman. Their teacher is Jenna Elsberry.

In staff spotlights, Brentwood High’s Harriet Medlin was awarded the Tennessee Association for the Gifted Teacher of the Year, and Rachel Lytle was awarded with the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) Outstanding New Biology Teacher Award. Centennial’s Kurstin Bush received the Tennessee Foreign Language Teaching Association Teacher of the Year. Wendy Comer from Crockett Elementary received the Tennessee Science Teachers 5-8 Science Educator of the Year. Independence High’s Scott Blade was honored with the Tennessee Secondary School Athletics Association (TSSAA) as the District 6 Male Coach of the Year.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Mike Looney shared information regarding school attendance and passing rates from the first quarter of the year. He called on Deputy Superintendent Jason Golden who reported for the Brentwood High STEM building. The Communications Department also shared a video created about the district’s mission and vision which showcases students from each school in the district with video clips submitted by each school’s Good News Ambassador or media teacher.

In the Board Chairman’s Report, Gary Anderson thanked the Heritage Elementary Glee Club under the direction of Angela Walters for performing prior to the meeting. He also reminded Board members of their retreat scheduled for Wednesday. He also shared a list of upcoming school holiday programs with the group.

In New Business, the Board:

  • Approved amendments to the 2017-2018 School Board Budget including an amendment appropriating $40,000 received from Middle Tennessee State University for Tuition and Stipends for CTE Program; an amendment appropriating $5,000 received from the Williamson Chamber Through a 3 Star State Grant for the Fairview Middle School mechatronics program; and an amendment appropriating $20,000 received from the Department of Safety and Homeland Security Grant for Distracted Driving Program Equipment.
  • Approved a Central Cafeteria Fund amendment appropriating $92,680 to cover the two percent raise for cafeteria workers.
  • Approved an Extended School Program Fund amendment appropriating $98,710 to cover the two percent raise for SACC workers.
  • Approved an Education Capital Projects Fund Intra-Category adjustment for Franklin High School roofing.
  • Approved a Major Category Transfer Resolution for 2017-2018 classified salary plan and adjustments.
  • Approved the Five Year Capital Outlay Plan 2017-2023.
  • Approved two policies on first reading including Board Meeting Agendas and Dissection.

In other business, the Board:

  • Approved recommended field trip fee requests.
  • Approved three policies on second reading including Field Trips and Post-Secondary Institution Permission Form, Graduation with Honors or Distinction and Student Equal Access.
  • Approved the 2017 LEA Compliance Report.
  • Approved the Spring Hill Presbyterian Church lease with Heritage Middle School.
  • Approved construction of a new Fairview High School press box.

The next regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education is scheduled for Tuesday, January 16, 2018, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Administrative Complex.
