Across the Board – January 18, 2018

The Williamson County Board of Education gave Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney high marks in his annual evaluation and extended his contract to the maximum four years allowed under Tennessee law. The Board approved the contract extension, which runs until January 17, 2022, during its January 18, 2018, meeting.

Students were honored for accomplishments in the arts during the meeting. Connor Flatt from Page High was recognized for his selection to the All State Band, ninth and tenth grades. His teacher is Michael Rosson.

Several students were honored for their selection to the All State Band, eleventh and twelfth grades, including Brentwood’s Meredith Sparks and Jessica Cortez, teacher Randy Box; Centennial’s Anna Cawthorne, teacher Scott Miller; Franklin’s Sarah Li, Ken Yonemoto, Jason Frazier and Jordan Hafner, teachers David Aydelott and Jacob Campos; Page High’s Nathan Mohnke, teacher Michael Rosson; and Ravenwood’s Stacey Xiang, teachers Mark Kinzer and Brant Poindexter.

Students honored for their selection to the All State Orchestra, ninth and tenth grades, include Brentwood’s Bright Johnston, Emma Curtis and Launna Atkinson, teacher Andrew O’Keefe; Franklin’s David Xu, teachers David Aydelott and Jacob Campos; and Ravenwood’s Selina Wang and Kristen Lee, teacher Cassandra Brosvik.

Those selected to the All State Orchestra eleventh and twelfth grades, include Brentwood’s Katy Rose Bennett, Brooke Nienkark, Chandler Hart and McKayla Fetters, teacher Andrew O’Keefe; Franklin’s Sarah Xu and Broner McCoy, teachers David Aydelott and Jacob Campos; and Ravenwood’s Brendan Goodbred, Andrea Huang, Diya Mitra and Katie Davis, teacher Cassandra Brosvik.

In staff spotlights, five teachers were honored for earning National Board Certification. They include Suzanne Edward, Allendale and Scales; Lindsey Quitmeier, Brentwood High; Susanna Singleton, Centennial; and Jennifer Helm and Andrea Reeder, Independence.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Mike Looney thanked staff members for working to clear snow and ice from their school campuses. He also called on Deputy Superintendent Jason Golden who explained the snow day closing procedure.

In the Board Chairman’s Report, Gary Anderson praised Board members for completing the Superintendent evaluation document. He reminded Board members of their TSBA responsibilities and also encouraged them to sign up to attend graduation ceremonies in the spring.

In New Business, the Board:

  • Approved a 2017-2018 School Board Budget amendment for construction of a Fairview High School Press Box from funds donated by the City of Fairview.
  • Approved a 2017-2018 Board Meeting Schedule Revision for May 2018. The meeting will now be on Tuesday, May 22 because of a conflict with graduation dates.
  • Approved the 2018-19 Acceptable Use and Internet Safety Agreement (Student) and Acceptable Use and Internet Safety Agreement (Employee).

In other business, the Board:

  • Approved recommended field trip fee requests.
  • Approved two policies on second reading: Board Meeting Agendas and Dissection.

The next regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education is scheduled for Monday, February 19, 2018, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Administrative Complex.
