Across the Board - April 16, 2018

The Williamson County Board of Education celebrated students and staff at its April 16, 2018, meeting. In the area of academics, Yi Qu from Brentwood was honored for her perfect SAT score. Six students were recognized for earning a perfect ACT composite score including Brentwood High’s Derrick Chen, Owen Atkinson, Jack Holcombe and Aspen Martin; Franklin’s Evelyn Lanai; and Ravenwood’s Matthew Goodbred.

Several Brentwood High students placed first in the National Speech and Debate Association Tennessee state competition including Congressional Debate,  Naba Wahid for Senate; Camilia Mohamed for House 1; and Elizabeth Qiao for House 2. Their teachers are Matt Grimes and Harriet Medlin.

Summit High students were honored for placing first at the HOSA State Conference. Samantha Wright will be the HOSA State Reporter and Historian Officer for the 2018-19 school year. Tyler Stallings won the Job Seeking Skills Championship and Lori Hanes won the HOSA Happenings Championship. Their teachers are Christina Isong and Michelle Garon.

Two students won first place at the SkillsUSA competition. Centennial student Lucy Brito won for Related Technical Math.  Her teacher is Tim Sawyer. Independence student Chloe Copps won for Photography. Her teacher is Stephanie Prewitt.

Ravenwood’s Student Council members were recognized for their honors from the Tennessee Association of Student Council. Ravenwood High won the Platinum Council and the Best Fundraising Project awards. Megan Zaves will be the State President for the 2018-19 school year. Their adviser is Stephanie Dykes.

In staff spotlights, Lindsey Anderson from Woodland Middle received the 2018 Tennessee Library Association Louise Meredith School Library Media Award.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Deputy Superintendent Jason Golden called on National Weather Service Warning Coordination Meteorologist Krissy Hurley who presented the district with its StormReady certification. He thanked Safety and Security Director Mike Fletcher for his efforts to achieve the distinction. In addition, Golden updated the Board on TNReady testing. The district stopped online testing after the State experienced difficulties. Testing is scheduled to resume on Tuesday.

In the Board Chairman’s Report, Gary Anderson thanked the Fairview Elementary Chorus under the direction of Jason Bell for performing before the Board meeting. He also reminded the group of various district events in the coming months.

In New Business, the Board:

• Approved a 2017-18 Inter-Category Resolution General Purpose School Fund – Special Ed Expenses.
• Approved the Facilities Use Fee Schedule.
• Approved the Superintendent’s Tenure Recommendation to the Board.
• Approved three Board policies on first reading including Safety, Student Wellness and Suicide Prevention.
• Approved an Interlocal Agreement Between Williamson County, Williamson County Board of Education and Franklin Special School District for the Provision of Alternative Learning School Services.
• Approved Lipscomb to Scales rezoning.

In other business, the Board:

• Approved recommended field trip fee requests.
• Approved one policy on second reading, Online Learning Program.
• Approved the 2018 Encore Summer Enrichment Program.
• Approved a Heritage Middle School Renovation-Existing Space Conversion.
• Approved the Community Church of Westhaven Franklin lease with Pearre Creek Elementary School.
• Approved a Cooperative Purchasing Agreement.

The next regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education is scheduled for Wednesday, May 23, 2018, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Administrative Complex. The Board work session will begin prior to the meeting at 5 p.m.
