Academic All-Star – Natalie Ward, Walnut Grove Elementary

Published May 3, 2018

The Academic All-Star award is given to students who exhibit a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each Academic All-Star is chosen by his or her principal and receives a framed certificate, free food from Sonic Drive-In and other gifts from the district.

Walnut Grove fifth grader Natalie Ward is the type of student who’s always looking to improve. It’s a trait that has not gone unnoticed by the teachers at Walnut Grove who nominated her as this year’s Academic All-Star.

“Natalie demonstrates a consistent commitment to hard work and a remarkable resilience to push through,” said her teachers. “Even when she is challenged by a difficult assignment, she never complains or gives up. She has learned to not be shy about asking questions in order to truly learn and understand. Her heart’s desire is to improve, no matter the task.”

This is Natalie’s first year at Walnut Grove. Although she was nervous on day one, she says the teachers have helped her feel right at home.

“I like it here,” said Natalie. “The teachers do a good job of making connections with all of the things they teach me, and I have really improved in math.”

Despite her rising performance in math, her heart belongs to science.

“I like science the best,” said Natalie. “I really like experiments. Earlier this year, we made these cars that were strapped with rubber bands so they would go. It was really cool.”

When she’s not in school, Natalie can be found in the dance studio.

“I am learning jazz, tap, ballet, lyrical and hip hop,” said Natalie. “I like to dance because you can really express your feelings.”

Natalie also loves to make food and says she might want to be a baker one day. No matter the career, teachers say she’s sure to be successful.

“Natalie always maintains a positive attitude,” said her teachers. “She is a kind and thoughtful person who encourages her classmates. We are very proud of Natalie and predict she will have a bright future ahead of her.”
