Academic All-Star – Maymie Guthrie, Mill Creek Middle School

Published April 18, 2018

The Academic All-Star award is given to students who exhibit a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each Academic All-Star is chosen by his or her principal and receives a framed certificate, free food from Sonic Drive-In and other gifts from the district.

Thirteen-year-old Maymie Guthrie is the type of student who sets high standards for herself and works diligently to accomplish her goals.

That’s why teachers and administrators at Mill Creek Middle were pleased to name her as the school’s Academic All-Star for the 2017-18 school year.

“Maymie exemplifies what it means to be an All-Star each and every day at Mill Creek,” said her teachers. “She is a conscientious student who is always prepared and participates actively in class. When she does well, she revels in her academic success, and when she falls short of what she feels is acceptable, she isn’t afraid to work hard.”

Although she was nervous when she first came to Mill Creek last year, Maymie says she has grown to appreciate all of the wonderful things the school has to offer.

“There’s a lot of fun activities here,” said Maymie, whose favorite subject is science. “Also, the teachers do a really good job of explaining things.”

One of her favorite things to do at Mill Creek involves the school’s volleyball team.

“I play for the school, and I also play club volleyball,” said Maymie. “I started at a young age. I also played other sports, but volleyball was the one that stood out to me the most. I think it’s just a fun sport.”

Despite her busy schedule, teachers say Maymie works extremely hard to ensure she continues to grow and improve in all academic areas.

“Maymie perseveres,” said her teachers. “She puts in the extra effort to prepare, and she tries again in order to improve her previous results. She does all of this while masterfully balancing an exceptionally packed schedule with athletics and extracurricular involvements.”

Not only is Maymie known for her hard work in the classroom and on the volleyball court, but teachers say she’s also the type of student who uplifts and encourages everyone around her.

“Maymie embodies what it means to be a Maverick,” said her teachers. “She leads, exceeds, and inspires others every single day. We are so proud of how far she has come and how much she has grown this year.”
