The Academic All-Star award is given to students who exhibit a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each Academic All-Star is chosen by his or her principal and receives a framed certificate, free food from Sonic Drive-In and other gifts from the district.

Chapman’s Retreat Elementary is proud to announce that fourth grader Gavin Duke is the school’s Academic All-Star for the 2017-18 school year.

The surprise announcement was made during a school assembly February 8.

“Gavin has shown so much growth throughout his time at Chapman’s Retreat,” said his teachers. “He is a kind student who always displays a positive attitude. As a fourth grader, he has developed strategies to help him conquer challenges in a positive way.”

Having attended Chapman’s Retreat since kindergarten, Gavin says it’s a great school with wonderful teachers.

“I really enjoy this school and how we learn new things every year,” said Gavin. “Social studies is my favorite subject, but I’ve been learning lots of stuff in math and reading too.”

A true leader, Gavin even used his own experiences to educate others about the effects of bullying at a school-wide assembly.

“I just believe that children shouldn’t have to go through that, and I want it to stop,” said Gavin who admits to having some pre-speech jitters. “I was nervous at first, but then I just took a deep breath and did it.”

Not only does he love to spend time with his family in his spare time, but Gavin also likes to play numerous sports including football, baseball and basketball. As for a career, Gavin thinks politics might be in his future.

“I want to be President of the United States,” said Gavin. “I know a lot of things about presidents, and I think it would be cool to be able to help our nation.”

With such a lofty goal in mind, Gavin knows he’ll have to work hard in the classroom.

“School is important to me because I really want to get good grades and learn new things,” said Gavin. “It’s important to keep learning because it helps your brain grow.”

And that’s why those who know him best at school say Gavin is the perfect choice for this award.

“Gavin has made amazing strides to take responsibility for his success,” said his teachers. “He is an example for all students that persistence leads to growth and that there is always room for self-improvement.”
