The Academic All-Star award is given to students who exhibit a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each Academic All-Star is chosen by his or her principal and receives a framed certificate, free food from Sonic Drive-In and other gifts from the district.
Teachers at Kenrose Elementary School know 11-year-old Daniel Spatz as a hard-working, enthusiastic student who is always ready to learn. That, combined with his positive attitude and friendly personality, made him the perfect choice for this year’s Academic All-Star.
“When I first met Daniel, he stood out to me as someone who will make this world a better place,” said Kenrose Fifth Grade Teacher Kristi Roberts. “Daniel always comes to English language arts and social studies ready to learn. He asks good questions and wants to strive toward his personal best. Even when the task might be difficult, Daniel perseveres.”
Daniel, who is originally from Russia and moved here when he was four, says he couldn’t have asked to attend a better school.
“This school made me feel really at home like I belong here,” said Daniel. “When I first came here I didn’t really think I would fit in, but English as a Second Language (ESL) taught me a lot about how to speak English. I really am lucky to have such a great school and great people around me.”
Not only is Daniel committed to his classwork, but teachers say he is also a selfless individual who cares about others.
“Daniel is a student who wears his heart on his sleeve and is always willing to help his classmates and his teachers,” said Kenrose Fifth Grade Teacher Olivia Perucci. “Daniel continuously puts others before himself, and he wants the best for everyone.”
When he’s not in school, Daniel stays busy by participating in a number of activities.
“I graduated from cub scouts to boy scouts this year,” said Daniel. “I just earned my black belt in martial arts; I play guitar; and I also play baseball.”
Although he’s not sure what he wants to be when he grows up, Daniel’s teachers say they’re confident he will be successful no matter the career.
“I look forward to hearing about all of the accomplishments that Daniel has in his future because I have no doubt he will have many,” said Roberts.
It’s a sentiment echoed by Perucci.
“Daniel truly deserves this award because he is not only a model student, but he is going to grow up to make a difference in this world.”
