The Academic All-Star award is given to students who exhibit a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each Academic All-Star is chosen by his or her principal and receives a framed certificate, free food from Sonic Drive-In and other gifts from the district.

Fifth grader Codi Taylor has been chosen as Mill Creek Elementary School’s Academic All-Star for the 2017-18 school year. The announcement was made during a school-wide assembly April 5.

“Codi’s teachers describe her as hard-working and someone who always gives 100 percent in her studies,” said MCES Principal Julie Sparrow. “She never hesitates to ask questions when she has difficulty understanding concepts in class. No matter how difficult her work may be, Codi perseveres by remaining calm and never giving up.”

According to her teachers, Codi’s exceptional study habits and willingness to accept help are indicative of her overall commitment to her schoolwork.

“Whenever Codi’s teachers offer her a chance to obtain additional help, she always takes advantage of the opportunity,” said Sparrow. “She is diligent in completing her work and rarely has missing assignments.”

Codi’s two favorite subjects are math and reading. She likes math because she enjoys working with numbers, and her favorite books include the Can You Survive series and pretty much any book about swimming.

“I love to swim,” said Codi. “I’m on a swim team. I like learning different tricks and skills. My favorite is the backstroke.”

Codi, who is also a member of the school chorus, says she has enjoyed her time at MCES but she’s ready for a new challenge as she prepares for middle school.

“I’m kind of nervous to start middle school because I don’t know what the homework will be like,” said Codi. “But I am excited to meet new friends.”

In the meantime, Codi says she’ll continue to do her best as she finishes her fifth grade year.

“I think school is important,” said Codi. “If you want to go to college which I want to do, you need to have a good education. That means you have to learn instead of sitting at home on the couch.”
