The Academic All-Star award is given to students who exhibit a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each Academic All-Star is chosen by his or her principal and receives a framed certificate, free food from Sonic Drive-In and other gifts from the district.
Eleven-year-old Callahan Fielder has a competitive drive that not only motivates him in the world of athletics but also in the classroom.
Teachers say Callahan has a way of prioritizing his academic responsibilities while balancing extracurricular activities. That’s why he’s their choice for this year’s Academic All-Star at Scales Elementary.
“Callahan is a dedicated young man who models both outstanding behavior and a conscientious work ethic,” said his teachers. “He completes his assignments with a true sense of purpose and a desire to do his best. He consistently maintains a positive attitude, academic diligence and cohesive relationships with his friends.”
This was Callahan’s first year at Scales. Although he was nervous when he first arrived, Callahan says the students and staff made him feel right at home.
“There are a lot of nice people at this school,” said Callahan. “Mr. Baber was really welcoming for me. I’ve had pretty good teachers my whole life, but Mr. Baber is my favorite. He’s a fan of sports, and I like sports. I just like the way he teaches.”
Callahan is an avid hockey fan who’s been playing the sport since he was five. He also enjoys going for long runs with his parents.
“The furthest I have run was a marathon,” said Callahan. “I’ve done that twice. I just like talking to people when I run. It’s fun to talk while you run. It helps to take your mind off everything.”
Looking ahead to next year, Callahan says he’s excited to begin middle school and take on a new challenge.
“When things get tough it makes me want to do it even more,” said Callahan. “I don’t like to get beat at anything so it motivates me to work even harder.
