Woodland Middle Repeats as Battle of the Books Champion

Published March 9, 2017

For the second year in a row, Woodland Middle is the Battle of the Books champion.

Battle of the Books is an extracurricular opportunity for students who enjoy reading and discussing books. In early March, each middle school team meets for a quiz bowl contest. Students compete against their peers for the coveted title of Battle Champion.

All 10 WCS middle schools participated in the March 8 event, including first-year challenger Mill Creek Middle.

Woodland Middle defeated Sunset Middle in the final giving WMS its third Battle of the Books title and its first back-to-back championships.

The WMS team members are Kayla Jordan (team captain), Ana Antic, Gavin Blanchette, Regan Enderle, Ryan Jordan and Karina Sheth. The alternates are Sheerea Yu and Ella Bullock-Papa. The setup crew for the events includes Cynthia Xu, Srinidhi Sridharan, Aanya Kadakia, Aria Beloate, Eli Bullock-Papa, Zack Rufener and Connor Tasik. The team is coached by WMS Librarian Lindsey Anderson.

The purpose of the Battle of the Books program is to promote a life-long love of reading among students. The contest encourages students to read a variety of books and remember information about the plots, character and settings.

The battle format has questions from eight books that the coaches of each team choose together over the summer. The battle includes three rounds of these questions for the teams in order to decide which final two teams will appear in the final round. The battle is designed to be a group effort between a team comprised of a maximum number of six people from each school.
