WCS Librarian Log – September, 2016

Published September 28, 2016

Williamson County is lucky to have dedicated librarians in our schools who take it upon themselves to encourage students to read, do research and discover the wonder of books via creative activities, displays and reading-related challenges.

This section will give WCS librarians a chance to tell parents what’s going on in their child’s libraries and highlight some of the people that make them special.

Elementary Schools

Crockett Elementary: Students are using BYOT and WCS iPads to take Accelerated Reader quizzes and read ebooks on Destiny Discover.

Edmondson Elementary: Students at Edmondson Elementary School expand their learning through library activities which complement and extend classroom curriculum.

Hunters Bend Elementary: Hunters Bend first graders became engineers this month. They worked together to research bridges, draw out the plan, construct the bridge, and then test it with animals of different weights. Everyone was amazed at the strength of our bridges.

Kenrose Elementary: At Kenrose Elementary School, fifth grade students compare and contrast primary and secondary sources by using a teacher-created board game.

Pearre Creek Elementary: Pearre Creek Elementary has the Million Word Club where students read and take the Accelerated Reader test on books in their “just right” zone. Medals and certificates are presented to students who have read one, two and three million words. Students work hard all year to earn the medals and certificates. We are excited that we already have five fifth graders and two third graders in the Million Word Club. At Pearre Creek, we know that readers are leaders.

Middle Schools

Fairview Middle: Eighth grade American History projects are on display in the Media Center. They were studying the 13 Colonies.

Grassland Middle: Our “If you liked the movie, you’ll love the book” display encourages students to read at GMS.

Page Middle: Page Middle students enjoyed learning about their new school library through the popular game, Pokemon Go! Students worked together in teams to “catch” the Pokemon characters that could be found throughout the library by using the call numbers of the books for GPS coordinates. Once the team has “caught” the Pokemon character, they answer the questions about the section of the library where they caught the character on the back of their Pokedex. The winning teams from each class will take control the Pokemon “gym” and have their names posted to the Pokemon Gym sign-in the library. Students will have opportunities throughout the year to take over the gym by completing different reading challenges or through their classes. The final gym takeover at the end of the school year will be the student who has read/checked out the most number of books over the year.

Spring Station Middle: Spring Station Middle is proud to introduce the Artistree. It is a tree designed to display student work which will be changed every two weeks.

Sunset Middle: Students at Sunset Middle enjoyed the “Book Bites Café,” where they were able to sample and critique different genres of books—many students walked away with a new favorite genre.

Woodland Middle: We kicked off the year with Olympic reads and we’re “catching” great reads in the library. Cool displays help students learn about the awesome books in the WMS Library.

High Schools

Franklin High School: As the only International Baccalaureate school in the county, we started the year with a display featuring the IB learner Profile. We recently hosted pre-IB and honors sophomore classes for instruction in using print and online resources and evaluating web pages. At the end of the month, as part of the homecoming festivities, we will host a karaoke contest in the library. We are off to a great start here at Franklin High. Librarian Ann Benkert livens up the front desk with flowers from her garden.

Independence High: Our IHS library has been a busy one. Spanish I classes have been researching articles from Spanish speaking countries, using TEL and Google classroom. French classes have been researching a famous French person using TEL and Google slides. Also, we have cool displays to recommend great reads.

Ravenwood High: It is a cheer for the school- Red, Gold, and Black, Raptor Attack. So, all of the books on the display are one of the school colors in that order.
