WCS Librarian Log – January 2017
Published January 26, 2017
Williamson County is fortunate to have dedicated librarians who take it upon themselves to encourage students to read, research and discover the wonder of books via creative activities, displays and reading-related challenges.
This section is designed to give WCS librarians a chance to tell parents what’s going on in their child’s libraries this month.
This is a special month for the WCS Librarian Log because January is Williamson Loves Libraries month. There are lots of exciting activities going on to spread the love of reading and awareness about the resources our school libraries have to offer. The public libraries also recently hosted Williamson Loves Libraries events. WCS librarians were out in full force to share the wonderful things going on in each school library.
Elementary Schools
Pearre Creek Elementary: Pearre Creek Elementary students are enjoying all of the new books we have in the library! We added 189 picture books, 248 chapter books, 20 biographies and 146 non-fiction titles. These books were purchased using the profit from our Fall Book Fair.
Hunters Bend Elementary: The Caldecott medal is given to the most distinguished American artist for a children’s picture book. The Hunters Bend Hound Dogs read several books that were contenders for the Caldecott Medal and voted on their favorite. The winner was The Night Gardener.
Kenrose Elementary: Fifth grade students are enjoying STEM activities in our maker-space program! Students are discovering how a simple circuit, solar panels and levers work. We also enjoyed having the Kenrose Cardinal attend Williamson Loves Libraries night at the Brentwood Public Library.
Middle Schools
Brentwood Middle: For Williamson Loves Libraries month, Brentwood Middle is doing the 2017 Reading Challenge. Students will read five books from a choice of 16 categories. Students will earn BMS Bucks and be entered into drawings for gift cards and book fair vouchers. The challenge runs through May 1. Also, BMS librarian Lyn Anderson made a poster match game displaying teachers and their favorite books for the WLL event at the Brentwood Library. The poster will be displayed in the BMS library for students to guess their teachers’ favorite books after the WLL event.
Fairview Middle: Chinese treasures are on display in the library. The treasures all have an interdisciplinary connection to sixth grade social studies illustrating things like the First Emperor’s Terra Cotta Army, the panda bear and the significance of the dragon.
Grassland Middle: Grassland Middle School is celebrating Williamson Loves Libraries Month by sponsoring a “Search App Survivor Contest.” Students can enter by completing seven “Survivor” type questions in the Library Fun Google Classroom. Answers can be found using many of the Williamson County Schools Student Internet Resources and some helpful reader advisory websites.
Page Middle: We are so excited to have author Sharon Cameron come to Page on January 26! Sharon will speak to our seventh graders about what historical events and stories have inspired her writing. She is a local author who was born and raised in Nashville, and currently resides in Spring Hill. She is the author of the historical fiction books The Dark Unwinding, A Spark Unseen, Rook and her most recent book that came out last fall, the dystopian novel The Forgetting.
Sunset Middle: Sunset Middle students are taking the 2017 Reading Challenge by reading three novels in a month, along with a chance to compete for autographed novels. Some of our seventh-grade Sabers will also get to participate in a writer’s workshop with author Sharon Cameron later this month.
Woodland Middle: Students are encouraged to celebrate Williamson Loves Libraries month by participating in a variety of activities. They can play Reading Bingo, in which they complete any three reading activities on the sheet. There is also a Winter NaNoWriMo for students to join in Google Classroom. Students and faculty are also encouraged to take a “shelfie” in which they take a picture with a favorite a book for a display in the library. Students can earn PBIS tickets for their participation. We will also host local author Andrew Maraniss on February 14 and hear about his non-fiction book Strong Inside which is about Perry Wallace, the first African American basketball player in the SEC.
High Schools
Franklin High: At Franklin High, we are celebrating WLL Month with a Five Book Reading Challenge. We have also made a display of teacher recommended books. We are doing several packages on the school news as well to promote reading!
Ravenwood High: Over winter break, the Ravenwood library had our group study rooms updated. They look great and students are glad to have a space in the library to work in groups! Thank you to our administration and PTO for paying for this update. We are also publicizing Graphic novels in our library, and we are preparing to celebrate with our students who completed the 10 Book Challenge.
