Two Brentwood Middle students proved their scientific knowledge in the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge 2017.
When the competition began in the middle of December 2016, Gitanjali Rao and Srihita Adabala both entered. They had to identify a problem, create a new invention or solution and then make a video detailing their ideas.
The videos were judged on creativity, scientific knowledge, persuasiveness and effective communication and the overall presentation.
Srihita was named the Tennessee State Merit winner, and Gitanjali moved forward in the competition to be one of 10 national finalists.
Gitanjali was assigned 3M Research Specialist Dr. Kathleen Shafer as a mentor to help her complete a summer assignment. Gitanjali will then present her solution at the Final Event in October with all of the other finalists from around the nation.
“We are super proud of these two students,” said BMS Principal Brandon Barkley. “It’s a pretty impressive accomplishment.”
