TDOE Announces New TNReady Proposal

Published November 3, 2016

The Tennessee Department of Education has announced its plan to phase-in the TNReady End of Course scores into high school students’ grades.

Because the new TCAP exams are more rigorous than past years, scores are expected to dip as everyone gets used to the change. Because of this, the TDOE suggests a progressive raise in the amount the scores count toward a student’s final grade over the next three years.

The proposal is as follows:

  • 10 percent of the final grade for the 2016-17 school year
  • 15 percent of the final grade for the 2017-18 school year
  • District chooses between 15-25 percent for 2018-19 and beyond

The proposal is expected to pass its final reading in January.

Currently, the high school TCAP scores count for 25 percent of the second semester average, matching the other high school course semester exams in Williamson County Schools. If the proposal is accepted, WCS will consider changing local exam policies to remain consistent.

The EOC “quick scores” – the scores used for student grade – are planned to be returned to the district before the end of the school year so the scores can be used for student grades. If the scores are late, the district will choose whether or not to include those scores.

New EOC reporting for the families will be delivered to the district over the summer. The reports will not be related to the student’s grades, but it will give details about the student’s performance in relation to grade-level expectations. More information about these new reports is available on the TDOE’s website.

The TDOE’s proposal specifically related to high school TCAPs, but it is expected a similar phase-in proposal will be presented in regards to the TCAPs for grades 3-8.

More information will be published as it becomes available.
