Summit High Teacher Named 2018 Global Learning Fellow

A Summit High School teacher is one of only 48 educators from around the nation who has been selected for the NEA Foundation’s Global Learning Fellows program.

“It felt like I won the lottery,” English teacher Deborah Bohn said. “I literally ran around Summit High School telling everyone about it.”

As a Global Learning Fellow, Bohn will spend the next year developing her skills in global competency so she can teach her students global citizenship and the importance of understanding global issues.

“I’ve been traveling internationally for two decades,” Bohn said. “Because of my travels, I already bring a bit of a global perspective into the classroom and into my literature lessons.”

In October, the teachers will meet in Washington, D.C. for a workshop. Bohn will be supported both online and in-person as she learns. Next summer, Bohn will join the other Global Learning Fellows for a nine-day international field study in South Africa.

“I’m eager to brainstorm with other teachers from other states about ideas for bringing a global perspective into the class room,” Bohn said. “And to be completely honest, if we have some free time, I’m also dying to go on a safari and see a lion or elephant in the wild. I mean, come on, it’s Africa!”
