The purpose of this section is to answer any questions parents, teachers or community members might have regarding the school district and to set the record straight in regards to any rumors that might be circulating.

If you have a question or have heard a rumor that you would like for us to address, simply SEND US your questions and we will respond to them in upcoming issues of InFocus. Below are some of the questions we have received since our last issue.

I know in the past as well as this year, fall break is only two days. Is the board considering a week long fall break ever? Area schools have already been receiving a week break so it would be nice to have the same for our students in WCS.

Each year the School Board has the option to include parameters for the calendar committee to follow. The Board chose to exercise this option in advance of the 17-18 calendar committee’s work. The specific parameters included the creation of three different calendars, at least one calendar including a week for fall break, and at least one calendar starting after Labor Day. The Board is scheduled to vote on a calendar for the 2017-18 school year at its November meeting.

I have heard the district is working on reducing the unbelievable amount of homework given to middle school students. Is this true?

As a general practice, WCS incorporates 10 minutes per grade level for homework. There is no immediate plan to alter this recommendation; however, a Bill of Rights for Parents, Students and Staff is currently being developed, at least in part, to address this concern. The Parents’ Bill of Rights has been approved and offers specific guidance on how to approach the school on any concerns you might have about your child’s learning. A link to the Parents’ Bill of Rights can be found HERE.
