The purpose of this section is to answer any questions parents, teachers or community members might have regarding the school district and to set the record straight in regards to any rumors that might be circulating.
If you have a question or have heard a rumor that you would like for us to address, simply SEND US your questions and we will respond to them in upcoming issues of InFocus. Below are some of the questions we have received since our last issue.
I recently read about the new policy regarding banning birthday treats in elementary schools, allergies and to promote a healthy lifestyle was the reasoning. Can WCS remove Pop-tarts and ice cream as options in the elementary school cafeterias? Why even have the options available? Throughout the day teachers and parents are trying to teach children about making healthy food choices then they go to lunch and are offered these unhealthy options. Where is the consistency?
According to the WCS Food Services Department, the products we sell meet very stringent USDA regulations. The item must be less than 200 calories; it must contain less than 230 mg. of sodium; the total fat must be less than 35 percent of calories; and the sugar limit for the item must contain less than 35 percent of the weight from total sugars. In addition, most of the products we offer are manufactured strictly for schools and are not sold in the local grocery stores. We believe the decision to purchase additional snacks should be between the parents and their child. As a result, some parents choose to set restrictions on their child’s account.
