Rumor Mill – April 21, 2017

The purpose of this section is to answer any questions parents, teachers or community members might have regarding the school district and to set the record straight in regards to any rumors that might be circulating.

If you have a question or have heard a rumor that you would like for us to address, simply SEND US your questions and we will respond to them in upcoming issues of InFocus. Below are some of the questions we have received since our last issue.

Metro Nashville Public Schools extended its Spring Break three days because they didn’t use all snow days this year. Will Williamson County consider doing the same?

Here in Williamson County Schools, it has long been the practice that up to 10 snow days are accumulated in the school calendar through extended work (stockpile) days and are not made up. If more than ten (10) days are missed due to weather related conditions, the Calendar Committee will make a recommendation to the Superintendent of Schools to make up any additional days missed.

I have several children in WCS. Some of my kids tell me their schools do not allow charging personal devices at school, while other kids tells me their schools provide charging stations for charging. Is there a specific policy for this? I think there’s some confusion or miscommunication on this issue.

District Board Policy 4.406p, the Acceptable Use and Internet Safety Agreement, addresses the issue of charging personal devices while at school: “Personal technology must be charged prior to bringing a device to school, and the device must run off its own battery while at school.”

While some schools may have made the decision to provide charging stations, that would be a site-based decision. Principals must consider logistical issues, safety and privacy concerns, and interruptions to instruction as they consider what is best for their students. Talk with your school’s principal to understand his or her position.
