Pilot Program to Waive Tuition for Out of County Bus Drivers

Published September 22, 2016

A new measure will allow school bus drivers who live out of county to bring their kids to the district to learn for free.

It’s part of an effort to recruit and retain additional WCS bus drivers. The pilot program, which was approved by the School Board at its September 19 meeting, will allow a limited number of tuition waivers to bus driver employees who live outside of Williamson County and enroll their children in a Williamson County school.

Currently, Board Policy allows WCS employees to enroll their child in the zone in which they are working, upon payment of the county portion of the annual per pupil expenditure established by the Board. Drivers employed under the pilot program would be subject to the same terms and opportunity as other employees described in Board Policy 1.703, except that the tuition amount described in the policy would be waived.

The pilot program is limited to 20 drivers. To apply online, visit the WCS Job vacancies website at https://selfservice.wcs.edu/Apply/employmentopportunities/default.aspx.

There are more benefits to being a WCS bus driver than just free tuition and excellent health care. Watch the three videos below to hear from current bus drivers as they explain what they enjoy the most about their job.
