Open Zoned School Update

Published April 21, 2017

Students who are proposed to be rezoned in 2018-19 will be allowed to attend their newly zoned school in 2017-18 if space is available.

The Williamson County School Board approved the measure at its April 17 meeting, contingent on the actual rezoning plan being approved by the Board in May. If the Board approves the plan as currently presented, the following additional schools will be open zoned:

  • Students rezoned to Bethesda, Chapman’s Retreat, Clovercroft, Heritage, Sunset and Winstead elementary schools
  • Students rezoned to Heritage and Sunset middle schools
  • Rising ninth graders to Centennial, Independence, Ravenwood and Summit high schools

If the Board approves Plan B in addition to the current rezoning proposal, the following additional schools will be open zoned for the areas in the current rezoning proposal Plan B:

  • Students rezoned to Grassland and Westwood elementary schools
  • Students rezoned to Fairview, Grassland and Woodland middle schools
  • Rising ninth graders to Fairview and Franklin high schools

The open zoning of the schools to which students will be rezoned in the Fall of 2018 is not to exceed 110 percent of any receiving school’s capacity. Parents/guardians will be required to provide transportation for students attending schools out of zone. This also includes the allowance for siblings to attend with these students.

Click here to fill out an application form. All open zone seats will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Applications will be time and date stamped at the local school level with the caveat that approval will not be granted unless the Board approves a rezoning proposal at its May 15 meeting that includes rezoning the residence of each applicant to the school to which they are applying.

Because the Board is currently scheduled to vote on the rezoning proposal on May 15, which was also the Board Policy’s deadline for open zone applications, the deadline for application related to this rezoning has been extended until Monday, June 5 at 4 p.m. All other open zone requests must be made by the May 15 deadline.
