Growth Dominates Discussion at Let’s Talk School

Published November 3, 2016

Population growth is on the minds of many Williamson County parents these days.

That topic dominated much of the discussion at this week’s two Let’s Talk School community meetings. The first event was held November 1 at Brentwood High; a second meeting followed November 3 at Independence.

Parents and employees turned out for both events, which began with a briefing from Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney. Looney told parents this year’s ACT composite score for the district will likely meet the goal of 24 set forth in the district’s Strategic Plan.

He also updated parents on changes to TNReady; shared information regarding the process to select a 2017-18 school year calendar; and revealed a proposed timeline for rezoning. But the majority of the night was spent discussing the incredible growth that’s expected in the district.

“In the next five years, we are going to grow by approximately 10,000 students,” said Looney to the crowd at Brentwood High. “That means the bus challenges that we currently have will be exasperated; the crowding that we have in schools is going to be exasperated; and the rezoning that we experience is going to be more significant. This is the single greatest challenge facing this district.”

Following the presentation, parents were given the opportunity to ask questions of Looney and School Board members. Questions touched on topics like school start times, dress codes and having a week-long Fall Break.

The district will hold three additional Let’s Talk School community meetings in the spring, although those dates have not yet been determined.
