BHS and RHS Students Enjoy Environmental Education Day

Juniors and seniors in Ravenwood and Brentwood high schools’ environmental science classes enjoyed an outdoor-learning activity October 5 at the Deerwood Arboretum.
That’s where the City of Brentwood’s Engineering Department hosted its ninth annual Environmental Education Day.
Students participated in some hands-on activities and learned about the water in local creeks and rivers. They also studied the habitats and ecology systems in the area, along with the animals that live in them and the impact humans and development have on the ecosystem.
Nearly 350 students from the two schools took part in the event.
“Our students are excited,” said BHS Assistant Principal Stephanie Simmons. “It’s hands-on which really motivates and inspires emerging students. And who knows? The next scientist could emerge as a result of this experience.”
Students said the outdoor activity helped them better understand some of the things they had discussed in class.
“Environmental Education Day opened my eyes to see the variety of ways in which I can impact the environment,” said BHS senior Allyson Smith. “It applied what we learned in class to the outside world and made AP Environmental Science more real.”
