Additional Bus Drivers Needed

Published August 9, 2016

Spread the word: Williamson County Schools needs additional bus drivers.

Due to the continued growth in the district, additional routes have been – and will continue to be – added as growth demands. The lack of drivers means the district must also continue double runs at some schools this year.

“WCS remains painfully short on drivers,” said Deputy Superintendent and General Counsel Jason Golden. “With normal life events and occasional sick days, we face shortages every day.”

Williamson County Schools currently has 224 drivers on staff but could use as many as 20 more every day. Although the district has been working hard to recruit new drivers all summer, Golden says the county’s low unemployment rate creates a unique challenge for recruiters.

“School districts across the nation are experiencing a bus driver shortage, especially in suburban areas,” said Golden. “For us, the challenge is even greater since so many of our county residents are currently employed.”

There are many perks that come with being a WCS bus driver, including:

  • Summers off
  • Competitive wages (starting pay is $14.72 per hour with no experience)
  • Split shift, which gives a lot of freedom in the middle of the day
  • No required weekends
  • Paid training
  • Great benefits including employer-paid health insurance coverage
  • Work that allows you to be off your feet
  • Extra income for retirees
  • Holidays off to spend with family and friends
  • Making a difference in the lives of students
